The Applied Physics Research Group’s research interests include the surface and magnetic properties of oxides, scanning tunnelling microscopy (both ambient and low temperature), materials for cleaner energy generation, self-assembly of nanostructures and advanced materials for IT and renewable energy purposes, polarons on oxide surfaces, oxide nano-templates. The group routinely publishes papers in leading physics journals.
In addition to this Prof Shvets has successfully spun out two export orientated high tech campus companies, Deerac Fluidics (now acquired by Labcyte, and Cellix Ltd. Both companies are managed by researchers who graduated from the group and operate in the medical devices / instruments sector. They employ highly skilled personnel in both Ireland and abroad. Prof Shvets’ is in the process of spinning out a third campus company (Miravex) with two members of his research group (Dr. G Mariotto and Dr. R. Kantor). Plans are in the early stages for at least one other campus company based on research conducted in the Applied Physics Research Group.
Prof Shvets also precipitated national initiative called the Spirit of Ireland, which aims to provide a renewable form of energy for Ireland based on wind and pumped storage technologies. The ultimate goal of this project is to achieve energy independence for Ireland and eventually turn Ireland into a net exporter of renewable energy.
