Nano In My Life TY Modules
In Novenmber CRANN launched a comprehensive series of modules on nanoscience suitable for Transition Year (TY) or senior cycle students. To date the modules have been requested by nearly 100 teachers in schools all over the country.
The “Nano in My Life” material, for the first time, brings nanoscience – an area of research at which Ireland excels and which is a key enabler for innovation and economic growth – to the Irish classroom. It encourages students to relate science subjects to innovative careers, with exciting and challenging applications. In 2010, CRANN produced a DVD which covered in an energetic, eclectic way, a range of topics within nanoscience, including health applications, development of new materials, ICT applications and careers within nanoscience.
With funding from Discover Science and Engineering, CRANN worked with teachers to produce user-friendly, practical materials, including teachers’ notes and powerpoint presentations to accompany 7 chapters of this DVD. These well-researched, novel materials will enable teachers to conduct a number of classes on nanoscience. Along with the launch of these “Nano in My Life” modules, CRANN in association with the Irish Science Teachers’ Association (ISTA) has announced a national poster competition open to senior cycle students. This will require entrants to depict a new product involving nanotechnology using the information they have learnt from the modules, thus linking scientific research with innovative applications.
In conjunction with the modules CRANN have launched a poster competition- What's next for nano? For more information on the competition follow this link
.
The modules are endorsed by the ISTA and are freely available to any teacher who wishes to use them.
