Introduction

CRANN actively engages with over seventy companies of all industry types, from Small and Medium Enterprises to Multinationals in diverse sectors. We operate a comprehensive engagement model, scalable to each organization’s requirements.   In identifying each company’s key challenges, we translate these requirements into a work programme. In partnership with the company we help identify and apply for the appropriate support funding and assign CRANN resources to deliver the solution.   Industry engagements can be fully collaborative or contract research, ranging from multi-disciplined teams based across both partner sites to a single CRANN researcher.   Engagements can utilize the full gambit of CRANN capabilities, access specific infrastructure assets or simply use one piece of equipment to perform a single measurement. In every case the solution provided is custom designed to reflect the problem.

CRANN’s industrial strategy is to continually scale, develop and operate towards an industry interface focused on minimising the barriers for new industry engagement and harnessing the world-class research and infrastructure competence which resides within CRANN.

We aim to ensure that the commercial exploitation of research being developed within CRANN occurs in a realistic timeframe leading to direct benefit for the Irish economy. There are currently approximately thirty technologies available for commercialisation from CRANN. Much of this technology is patented and supported by Trinity Research and Innovation office. Our technologies have applications in semiconductors, medical devices, sensors, energy and optics.

This schematic illustrates the most frequently used engagement mechanisms and opportunities that CRANN would promote to industry as methods for mutually beneficial engagement.

CRANNs diverse researcher base, our international reputation and the institute’s world class infrastructure are seen as key enablers for industry, providing a company with an extremely flexible, configurable resource that is externally managed to meet each company’s needs.   Key elements in-place to enable this approach are strong institute governance, an IP management strategy, the timely financial and administrative management of all programmes and the availability of dedicated CRANN staff to manage the industry engagement under direct company oversight.

CRANN’s management team can identify new opportunities and foster business relationships through varied funding programmes and agencies; offering and identifying the most appropriate route for your company. CRANN can drive the full engagement process from application, project submission through to implementation and final commercialisation in partnership with the company and our state agencies.

As a company your engagement path with CRANN can indeed be varied.   It could be as an industry partner collaborating to drive your research agenda in a SFI or European funded consortium or as a member of the Competence Centre for Applied Nanotechnology. You could access CRANN instrumentation under an Innovation voucher or a direct funding model to solve your immediate production problems, or perhaps even develop new processes or products under the Enterprise Ireland Innovation Partnership scheme. Whatever the mode of engagement, CRANN commits to help you find the best solution to address your business needs.
