Prof. Lunney leads a research group whose interests are based around photonics; high power laser-matter interactions, with emphasis on pulsed laser ablation of solid materials, pulsed laser deposition of solid and nanoparticle thin films of functional materials for research, the development of novel magnetic and electrical methods for controlling the conditions in laser produced plasmas and conical refraction of light in biaxial crystals.
James G Lunney received a BSc and PhD degrees in physics from Queen’s University Belfast in 1974 and 1980. He was appointed Lecturer in Physics in Trinity College Dublin 1980. Currently he is the Associate Professor of Physics and Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. He has served on the Board of Trinity College Dublin and CRANN and was the Head of School of Physics between 2005 - 2008.
