Nanoscience DVD piloted during Science Week

Aine Cahill from Muckross College suited up for CRANNs clearnoom

CRANN visited six schools during Science Week to pilot a new DVD on nanoscience for Transition Year (TY) students. The DVD will be formally launched during Nanoweek 2011, which will run from January 31st until February 4th (http://www.nanonetireland.ie/events.htm).

The DVD aims to excite and engage TY students on the basics of nanoscience and its applications in their everyday lives. It showcases the wide range of industries and opportunities where nanotechnology is applied. It is about promoting and raising awareness on the exciting research that is taking place in CRANN and globally and the importance of nanotechnology to Ireland’s economic future. The six schools that took part in the pilot were Eureka Secondary School, Kells; Marian College, Lansdowne Road; St Mark’s, Tallaght; Blackrock College, Co Dublin; Loreto on the Green, Dublin 2 and St Joseph’s College, Lucan.

TY students provided feedback on the content and presentation style through discussions and questionnaires, facilitated by CRANN personnel. The pilot schools will now take part in a competition designed to highlight nanotechnology in their lives, through either a poster or homemade video.  Prizes will be awarded at the national DVD launch to be held during Nanoweek.

Science Week ran from 7th until the 14th November 2010. Piloting this DVD on nanoscience fit in well with the aims of the week - to make science more interesting and accessible to children and adults alike. The week highlights science, technology and engineering as being hugely relevant to us all in our everyday lives; that it develops cutting edge innovations, leads to interesting and exiting career options and develops creativity in our children. Discover Science & Engineering plays the role of coordinator of Science Week.

In addition to the constructive feedback from over 150 students in the six participating pilot schools, a further 60 TY students viewed the offline edit either within CRANN (12) or TCD’s School of Physics (48) during the week. These 60 students were participating in CRANN’s “Experience Nano” week-long placement programme and in the School of Physics TYPE programme
