Michael Mayberry, Director CR Intel visits CRANN

“We have a productive engagement in Ireland and we want to continue with that” said Mike Mayberry, Vice President, Technology and Manufacturing Group, Director, Components Research INTEL CORPORATION, during his visit to CRANN this week.

Partnerships between Intel and Irish universities indicate the strength of Ireland’s research capability and the value that multinationals are obtaining from that academic engagement.

“The most disruptive technologies take quite a long time to become production ready. Typically for university projects, we aim for five to 10 years out,” said Mayberry. CRANN is comfortable with these timelines, having worked with Intel for the last six years. Intel works with around 100 universities across the globe but the relationship with CRANN is unusual, with Intel recruiting some of its researchers as well as placing five of its own people in Trinity.

“We only put researchers in residence in a handful of universities,” said Mayberry, highlighting the special relationship.

Dr Diarmuid O’Brien, executive director of CRANN, believes the Intel relationship with Irish universities reflects the growing maturity of the State’s research community, validating years of funding and government support, as well as the reputation of Irish research institutes, such as CRANN.

Intel doesn’t know the technology it will want in 2020 but it works with research institutes like CRANN to develop research programmes which might answer questions it expects to be asked. “We realise we can’t think of everything we need to think about, so we want to engage with as many external groups as we can, universities especially. We want to see who can come up with the next set of great ideas” Mayberry said during his visit to CRANN.

Intel USA and CRANN work very closely on projects with fortnightly meetings and engagements, annual trips from CRANN to Intel, and regular visits from Components Research staff to Ireland.

Michael Mayberry is director of Components Research which is the research arm for the Technology and Manufacturing Group of Intel. He is responsible for ongoing research to enable future process options for Intel's technology development organizations. In a lecture to CRANN staff and students during his visit, he outlined the roadmap for the continued miniaturisation of Intel device features and the ongoing research to understand materials at the sub 15nm range.

“Intel views Ireland as a competitive place for research investment but Ireland needs to continue to invest in people, infrastructure and excellence to ensure it remains internationally competitive”, said Dr Diarmuid O’Brien.
